Source :TechRepublic
Part of the process of building a project schedule involves breaking down the work into smaller activities (the Work Breakdown Structure) and then sequencing the activities. When you sequence the activities you should make sure that every activity is related to at least one other activity. In many cases, the relationships will involve two or more activities.

There are a couple of ways to represent these relationships. Perhaps the most common technique is called Precedence Diagramming Method (PDM). (This technique is sometimes called Activity on Node (AON).) In the PDM technique, the activities themselves are placed in boxes and the boxes are connected with arrows that show the precedence relationship.

The most common precedence relationship is when one activity cannot start until another activity has finished. In most schedules this is the relationship that exists in almost all (if not all) cases. This is referred to as a Finish-to-Start relationship. However, there are three other ways that one or more activities can be related to another one. All four are described below.

First, let’s assume we have two activities – “A” and “B”. It does not matter what the exact activities are. It only matters that there is a relationship between them. There are four possible relationships.

Finish-to-Start

This means that Activity B cannot start until Activity A has completed. This is by far the most common relationship between multiple activities. In most schedules, all relationships will be finish-to-start. Example:

Activity A is “Create the Project Charter.”

Activity B is “Obtain Project Charter approval from the Project Sponsor.”

This finish-to-start relationship would say that we must create the Project Charter before we obtain Project Charter approval from the Project Sponsor.

Start-to-Finish

Start-to-finish means that Activity A must start before Activity B can finish. This is a very rare relationship.

Example: Let’s assume that you want to fertilize your garden, but the plants must all be wet when the fertilizer is applied.

Activity A is to “fertilize the garden.”

Activity B is to “water the garden.”

The start-to-finish relationship says we need to start watering the garden (activity B) first to get the plants wet. This activity must continue until the fertilizing starts (activity A). This will ensure the plants remain wet until the fertilizer is ready to be applied. Note that you can start watering at any time and you can finish fertilizing at any time. The relationship only ties the start of activity A to the completion of activity B.

<!–[if gte vml 1]>

A

B

< ![endif]–>Start-to-Start

This means Activity A must start before Activity B can start.

Example: Assume that you are having your walls painted in one room and wallpaper is being hung in another room. You want to minimize the total disruption and so you want to make sure both activities happen at the same time.

Activity A is “Paint the walls.”

Activity B is “Hang the wallpaper.”

The wallpaper hangers may be ready to go (activity B). However, the start-to-start relationship says that they cannot start until the painting starts (activity A). This relationship is based on the activity start times. The end times of each activity are not related and, in fact, one activity could end at a much later time than the other.

<!–[if gte vml 1]>

A

B

< ![endif]–>Finish-to-Finish

This means Activity A must finish before Activity B can finish.

Example: Assume you’re cooking dinner and you want the turkey to finish cooking before the potatoes.

Activity A is “Cook turkey.”

Activity B is “Cook potatoes.”

The finish-to-finish relationship says that the turkey must finish cooking (activity A) before the potatoes finish cooking (activity B). This relationship is based on the end times. They can each start whenever they need to, as long as they finish in this order.

The Johari Window is a communication model that can be used to improve understanding between individuals within a team or in a group setting. Based on disclosure, self-disclosure and feedback, the Johari Window can also be used to improve a group’s relationship with other groups.

Developed by Joseph Luft and Harry Ingham (the word “Johari” comes from Joseph Luft and Harry Ingham), there are two key ideas behind the tool:

That individuals can build trust between themselves by disclosing information about themselves; and

That they can learn about themselves and come to terms with personal issues with the help of feedback from others.

By explaining the idea of the Johari Window to your team, you can help team members understand the value of self-disclosure, and gently encourage people to give and accept feedback. Done sensitively, this can help people build more-trusting relationships with one another, solve issues and work more effectively as a team.

Explaining the Johari Window:
The Johari Window model consists of a foursquare grid (think of taking a piece of paper and dividing it into four parts by drawing one line down the middle of the paper from top to bottom, and another line through the middle of the paper from side-to-side). This is shown in the diagram below:

Using the Johari model, each person is represented by their own four-quadrant, or four-pane, window. Each of these contains and represents personal information – feelings, motivation – about the person, and shows whether the information is known or not known by themselves or other people.

The process of enlarging the open quadrant vertically is called self-disclosure, a give and take process between the person and the people he/she interacts with.

As information is shared, the boundary with the hidden quadrant moves downwards. And as other people reciprocate, trust tends to build between them.

However, disclosing information which could damage people’s respect for you can put you in a position of weakness.

Using the tool:
The process of enlarging the open quadrant horizontally is one of feedback. Here the individual learns things about him- or her-self that others can see, but he or she can’t.

Tip 2:
Be careful in the way you give feedback. Some cultures have a very open and accepting approach to feedback. Others don’t. You can cause incredible offence if you offer personal feedback to someone who’s not used to it. Be sensitive, and start gradually.

If anyone is interested in learning more about this individual, they reciprocate by disclosing information in their hidden quadrant.

For example, the first participant may disclose that he/she is a runner. The other participant may respond by adding that he/she works out regularly at the local gym, and may then disclose that the gym has recently added an indoor jogging track for winter runners.

As your levels of confidence and self-esteem rises, it is easier to invite others to comment on your blind spots. Obviously, active and empathic listening skills are useful in this exercise.

The Johari Window in a Team Context

Keep in mind that established team members will have larger open areas than new team members. New team members start with smaller open areas because little knowledge about the new team member has yet been shared. The size of the Open Area can be expanded horizontally into the blind space, by seeking and actively listening to feedback from other group members.

Group members should strive to assist a team member in expanding their Open Area by offering constructive feedback. The size of the Open Area can also be expanded vertically downwards into the hidden or avoided space by the sender’s disclosure of information, feelings, etc about himself/herself to the group and group members.

Also, group members can help a person expand their Open Area into the hidden area by asking the sender about himself/herself. Managers and team leaders play a key role here, facilitating feedback and disclosure among group members, and by providing constructive feedback to individuals about their own blind areas.

Key Points:
In most cases, the aim in groups should be to develop the Open Area for every person.

Working in this area with others usually allows for enhanced individual and team effectiveness and productivity. The Open Area is the ‘space’ where good communications and cooperation occur, free from confusion, conflict and misunderstanding.

Self-disclosure is the process by which people expand the Open Area vertically. Feedback is the process by which people expand this area horizontally.

By encouraging healthy self-disclosure and sensitive feedback, you can build a stronger and more effective team.

Hi all ,
i am going to write about my language of nation Hindi,

We all feel that we love our country i love my country i am proud of being citizen of my country…..i love my national anthem ,always respect it .Love my language of nation..bla bla….many more things we always murmur in our soul …….

few days ago… i went to ATM machine to withdraw some cash…

One person very less educated person with bit less logic was withdrawing money..
He has chosen HINDI(my national language) for interaction language in machine.
Machine send message tht he would not get transaction sleep for money he is going to withdrow… meassage was in hindi , he understood the message bt was nt able to decide whether to press enter button , cancel button…..
he tried more then thrice ,i was jst beside him and watching with a proudy smile and after some time i told let me help u….i was used to choose english for interaction language in machine (As average educated person of india always gives more respact to english then Hindi, and i was also part of that society).

Person insert his card…chooses hindi as a language…scene ws going smoothly cz i knew where he ws making mistake …
n sudden one word “aharan” comes in window where i used to see “Withdraw’ as in English language…..here “aharan” was blinking at the place of withdraw..

I really stuck at that place and though what is the exact meaning of “Aharan” does it means withdraw..??

after few seconds person told me to click on “aharan” now i was really stumbled i ws feeling em brassed that i dnt know even my national language perfectly and was feeling proud abt being a software engineer …haha …

at last i help that person but ya before he thanked me for help..i thanked him to open my eyes…
from that i decided i will use Hindi as a primer language where it requires and will use rest language when it is necessary..

Dear friend this article let you bore may be…..

but at the end of this article

i have only one question to all educated so called educated Indians
How many times you have chosen Hindi as a communication language when u ve option of English?
How many know meaning of ‘aharan’ word ?
have u ever choose Hindi in ATM machine,
Have u ever choose Hindi in customer care service,
have u ever choosed Hindi News paper instead of having English…

I know English is necessary component of our life ,,,but if we say we are Indian we love our country ….i think we have certain responsibility towards our nation
…………….cheers there are lots more to come here………..:D
